Information On Activity Holidays : Prior To Departure
In this part of our guide to activity holidays we look at organizing yourself prior to going on an activity holiday.
Planning accordingly for your activity holidays will ensure you will have the best time possible while you are on them. Depending on what type of activity you will be doing, you should make sure that you are both mentally and physically fit, as well as prepared for every eventuality.
You should engage in some aerobic activity (jogging, cycling, swimming, etc.) at least 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week as preparation. Increase the length and intensity of the exercise as you get nearer the start of your holiday and get comfortable doing back-to-back days of exercise as you likely won’t get any rest days whilst you’re away.
Some things you will be doing like ice climbing or canoeing will not be practical to practice, but you can prepare for hiking and biking. If practicing for the specific activities on your holiday isn’t possible, the best fallbacks for preparation are cycling and walking.
You will be given a list that details the type of gear and apparel you will need to bring. You should be sure that each item on that list is with you, since a professional created that list and knows what exactly is needed. Along with what your guide tells you is required for your holiday, you should also take a few small bags, like a backpack and a fanny pack, that will carry all of your personal necessities; larger bags will be cumbersome and might slow you down.
It is generally best to wear durable, comfortable, fast-drying garments, in layers. You should also carry a second pair of shoes (just in case), a rain suit like “Frog Togs” that can be rolled up, a multi-functional jacket with a built in layering system and a good hat that can offer wind and sun protection. Sunglasses and swimsuits might be the only additional items that will be required.
Check to see if you will need to bring sleeping items such as a ground pad, tent, pillow and sleeping bag, or cooking equipment, such as cutlery and food. If you don’t have some of these items, you can check to see if the activity holiday company has any to rent for the duration of the trip. Your guide or instructor will carry a first aid kit for the group, but it is recommended that you take your own with you containing aspirin, bandages, insect repellent and other basics.
